Creative
Energy
I have felt the importance of creative energy as a tool for self-awareness and as a way to connect people. Feeling a natural flow in the crafts of poetry, multimedia arts, songwriting & singing, I use the arts to skilfully produce meaningful experiences for myself & the communities
I belong to.
I have learned so much by combining mediums & my output is deepened when I collaborate with artists across the disciplines.
A collective force is perpetuated when we use our talents and skills toward a vision of a better tomorrow keeping in mind all the species who will be here after us.
Core Values & Motivations
Strive toward Social Justice
Challenge Settler Consciousness
Go Gently Beyond the Mainstream
Respect the Environment
Grow Awareness of Indigenous Philosophies
Welcome New forms of Economy, of Sharing Wealth,
of Cooperation & Collaboration
Background
In `1993, I learned desktop publishing through an apprenticeship awarded by Diva: Art & Literary Journal of Women of South Asian Origin. Two years later Diva published my collection of poetry, Not to Understand. In 2001 I taught myself how to code & design websites and co-released ul-zahra.com Environment Friendly Choices. I co-founded Surrey Muse in 2011, a project to gather talents, each month, across the arts. In 2012, I began to sharpen my video & photography skills in turn producing video shows, music videos and video adverts. I self-published These Tales are True in 2016. The same year, I launched a collaborative music project, taRka, where I sang my poetry to instrumentals by musicians across genre & geography. The year before, in 2015, I joined Not in the Public Interest, an investigative project on first nation deaths in police custody where we bring attention to each death through various mediums like videos, illustrations & source documents.
